Letters from the SCD support group: Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 22:18:44 -0500 From: Midas Gold <midasgold@pipeline.com> To: SCD-list@longisland.com Subject: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Lactose... ...But Were Afraid to Ask Here are some URLs on lactose thay may interest y'all: Lactose: Friend or Foe? http://www.wegmans.com/kitchen/diet/lactose/orfoe.html Lactose Intolerance http://www.wegmans.com/kitchen/diet/lactose/lactose.html Here's a useful excerpt: "An easy way to check for lactose in cheese is to look at the Nutrition Facts under "Total Carbohydrates." Since the only carbohydrate in cheese is lactose, you can easily see how much lactose the cheese contains. If the total carbohydrates are listed as zero, then the cheese contains no more than half a gram of lactose per ounce. Compare to 12 grams of lactose in an 8 ounce glass of milk." And another: "Products which have a "Pareve" or "Parve" statement on the label contain no lactose. Because Jewish dietary laws require separation of meat and milk, the "pareve" marking is used to identify products that contain neither meat nor dairy based ingredients." -- Deanna
