Subject:

Sea Salt

Question:

I just looked up iodine sources in my Nourishing Traditions.  It says sea foods, unrefined sea salt, fish broth, butter, pineapple, and dark green vegetables are good sources.  Cabbage and raw spinach can block absorption when eaten raw. So as long as the sea salt is not refined it should still have iodine in it?  That's what it sounds like.  Any other input is welcome.

Elaine writes:

No, no.  Seasalt does not have iodine in it unless it is added back As the sea salt is harvested, Iodine by its inherent chemical characteristics,
sublmitates (evaporates into the air) and settles down and goes inside the soil eventually.  That is why people living near the sea coast have iodine in their soil but people inland and around lakes must get it supplementary. So fruits and veggies grown in the seacoast areas will contain iodine.
